as an advocate in different multicultural environments. The clients that we are charged with helping today are typically facing a multitude of problems. A failing economy, unemployment and
housing problems has left many without homes or even without adequate food to feed their families. Their pursuit for social justice is complicated by the lack of money and
knowledge necessary to make their problems known to those that can make a difference. As social workers we can help in this task. To do so, however, we
must not only be culturally cognizant but also savvy at manipulating our way through a system that seems to have more obstacles in place than it does mechanisms for solving
problems. As Sue (2005) cautions, it is "unethical to practice without the knowledge, expertise, and skills needed to provide culturally relevant services to an increasingly diverse population (3). There
are in fact many skills needed to work as an effective advocate in social work. These skills aid us in protecting a clients interest using the best means possible.
This may require something as simple as helping a client find work. It may be as complex as protecting a clients rights in a hostile work environment.
Ethical codes are in place that dictate what is appropriate and what is inappropriate in the interactions that are necessitated. So too are various laws and policies.
One of the most important skills we have at our disposal is our ability to effectively use ethical guidelines. To understand our clients we must get close to them
