unsightly deformities. While many tattoo and piercing establishments need to be licensed, there are always those few places that do not clean their needles for example, a dangerous practice that
can be responsible for spreading AIDS and other diseases. While the criticism of course may be refuted by the fact that most people can get tattoo and piercing procedures safely,
a final argument against the practice is that it is unsightly. Tattoos fade, but they are permanent, which is another reason not to jump on this bandwagon. In exploring body
modification, it is important to examine its history. Where did it begin? Obviously, Generations X and Y are not the first ones to be drawn to body art. Body modification
is something that has a long history ("Modern Modification," 2008). To suggest that those who are in their twenties and thirties are on the cutting edge of tattooing and
piercing would be na?ve. These types of decoration go back centuries and are tied to tribal rituals and habits. Professor Neil Whitehead of the University of Wisconsin at Madison explains
that the present cultural phenomenon is simply a subsection of a much larger phenomenon tied to human history ("Modern Modification," 2008). Whitehead notes that the practice of body modification is
based in Polynesia ("Modern Modification," 2008). When someone in the United States on the other hand has a piercing, he is identifying himself as a modern primitive ("Modern Modification," 2008).
