provides an impetus for addressing this social issue from a variety of perspectives. The Force Field Model Lewin (1946) describe a force field model as one that identified
the driving and restraining forces that create an equilibrium that is resistant to change. Efforts to reduce substance abuse on a societal level have been relatively unsuccessful, primarily because
of the equilibrium created between the driving forces of substance abuse, including poverty, availability of substances, lack of effective criminal justice response and lack of social accountability, and the restraining
forces, or the efforts that have been made from public health, social work and psychological health perspectives. The current situation, the current societal level of substance abuse in the
United States is reflective of both the extent of the problem and the nature of efforts to reduce the problem. Social researchers have recognized that as the number and
type of programs to address substance abuse increase, the number of individuals impacted by substance abuse has also risen (Chychula and Sciamanna, 2002). In creating an effective view
of the overall problem of substance abuse to inform potential methods for change, it is necessary to consider both the driving and restraining forces for the communities, organizations, groups, families
and individuals impacted by substance abuse. Identifying potential areas of difficulty in applying methods for change may increase the effectiveness of social programming to reduce substance abuse in the
