that conventional uses of technology are not always the ultimate solution for certain patients (Price, 2007). One example is that one patient had a leg that was amputated from the
hip, and prosthetics were not suitable for him, so he had to rely on crutches (Price, 2007). Martin created a design for a prosthesis and was able to fit the
patient right away (Price, 2007). As a result, the man could stand up for the first time and walk without the use of his crutches (Price, 2007). That is one
success story as it pertains to bionics. In exploring this issue, it pays to define the subject. Many have heard about bionics from television shows like The Bionic Woman, but
bionics are much simpler than Science Fiction television might suggest. Bionics, when broadly defined, is really a compression of biology so that engineering problems may be resolved (Harris, 2003). Many
think of it to be the other way around. That is, engineering should resolve the problems of human existence. The Mosby Encyclopedia defines bionics as "the science of applying electronic
principles and devices, as computers and solid-state miniaturized circuitry, to medical problems. Artificial pacemakers used to correct abnormal heart rhythms are an example" ("bionics," 1996). The pacemaker is something that
many are used to hearing about. However, there are many other examples such as the morphine pump and the cochlear implant (Gupta, 2002). On a greater technical level, bionics are
more than the alliance of technology with medicine. Bionics is in fact the application of methodology as well as systems that are found in nature in order to provide
further study of engineering systems ("Bionics," 2007). Bionics are something used in fields other than medicine, but when bionics are discussed many people think about the value it has
