investigates the utility of the Social Ecology Model. Historical development of the Social Ecology Model The Social Ecology Model provides a comprehensive approach to understanding behavior, as it suggests that
behavior is the result of numerous levels of influence on individuals (Williams, et al, 2006). For example, Lejckova, Mravcik and Vadimecky point out that the Social Ecology Model utilizes a
"combination of self-efficacy, school bonding and peer relations, as well as family and school climate characteristics" in order to delineate the influences on individual behavior (Lejckova, Mravcik and Vadimecky, 2007,
p. 133). However, in determining the precise historical development of this model, the sources get rather confusing as there appears to be numerous people who have added significantly
to this conceptual framework. For example, in regards to social philosophy, Murray Bookchin introduced this term in the 1960s. However, it is clear that Bronfenbrenners work in the late 1970s
has been pivotal to its application in community health. Bronfenbrenners model focuses on the "developing person, the environment, and the evolving interaction between the person and the environment" (Berry, 1995,
p. 379). Bronfenbrenner in the 1980s expanded the focus of his model to consider "external influences that affect the capacity of families to foster the healthy development of their
children" (Berry, 1995, p. 379). Concepts within the Social Ecology Model Bronfenbrenners Ecological Theory of Development argues that if human development is to be fully understood, it must take
