suitable only for one sex or the other. This paper considers how society constructs gender roles. Discussion Sex is a biological classification: male or female. But gender is a
social construct; it is what society has assigned to men and women over the years. That is, while sex is a biological fact, societies "tend to attribute all kinds of
meanings to the two sexes. Over time, these cultural meanings develop into gender roles or identities we call masculine and feminine, or male and female" (What is gender?) Once these
roles are inculcated into a culture, it is very difficult to change them, and the penalties for not playing by the rules can be severe. In Western society, for example,
a womans leading role is as a wife and mother. Despite decades of struggle and continuous demonstrations that women are capable of undertaking a vast array of careers, they are
still considered first in terms of their relationships. This also explains why women who are single or not seeing someone are often looked down on. It is assumed that they
are unhappy without a man in their lives. But its more than that; society says that they are supposed to have a man in their lives or there is something
wrong with them. Society also dictates the kinds of jobs that women can hold, if they have to go to work and cant stay home as a housewife and
mother. The jobs that are "suitable" for women are almost always of a "caregiver" nature, which goes along with societys assumption that women are intrinsically nurturing and caring, while men
are competitive. Women are also assumed to be turned inward and focused on family while men are outward-looking and focused on business, competition and getting ahead. These definitions have also
