When Christians read the Bible, it is a common experience that they interpret it according to how they have been taught. For example, Barbara Brown Taylor relates that when she instructs the students in her Bible class to read the story of Adam and Eve in Genesis, they inevitably interpret it according to conventional lines, with the snake viewed as Satan and the apple from the Tree of Knowledge representing disobedience, and so forth. However, when Taylor sends her students back to the text to locate the words "sin," "Satan," and "apple," many of them are genuinely astonished to find that these words do not appear in the scripture (Taylor 39). As this indicates, the story of Adam and Eve is overlain with interpretation that has occurred over the course of millennia, and this has added some features that are assumed so universally that it is easy to forget that they are actually not part of the narrative. However, the question remains of how to interpret the story of Adam and Eve. Scripture indicates that Christians should not be too literalistic, "We should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter" (Romans 7:6). Jesus often spoke in parables and used figurative speech to underscore moral lessons to his disciples ("Adam and Eve").
