common platforms which can be used to control the different elements of a smart home (Larson, 2009). While the technological capabilities have increased there still remain a number of areas
where there still needs to be careful consideration of the way the technology is leveraged and implemented. Considerations include the ethical, social and legal issues that may arise as a
result of the use of the technology and the way professional should incorporate these issues in their approach to the topic. The concept of a smart house is one
where the residents of the house are empowered, with technology such as a mobile phone or other control gadget may be utilised to control household appliances or other aspects of
the household environment (Adams-Spink, 2010). Smart homes may also be referred to as intelligent homes, or home networking, a useful definition is provided by the Smart Homes Association which states
define smart home technology as "the integration of technology and services through the home networking for a better quality of living" (Bierhoff at al, 2010). The potential benefits has resulted
in a large investment, for example the i2home project which was funded by the EU undertook research in the practical environment to assess the way in which disabled and older
people may be facilitated by providing them with a greater level of independence. The basic model for a smart home is the utilisation of middleware, which provides the user with
