terms of their beliefs and transposing those beliefs into ideas which could effectively be presented to people en masse. Both of these men were well-regarded in their time despite
the air of controversy which enveloped them both, and both continue to be revered for their ideas long after their deaths. What is interesting to note is that in
both cases, these men were deeply spiritual men. Both had religious backgrounds which were ingrained since childhood. In the case of Descartes, that background was in Catholicism.
In the case of King, that background was as a Baptist. Both men had an intense belief in God. Yet, despite this rooted belief in God, it is interesting
to note that both men were plagued by skepticism which permeated their ideas and their messages. In the case of Descartes, this skepticism came in the form of his
belief that the senses of man could be misleading and, therefore, it was necessary to assume certain things such as the existence of God as well as the assumption that
God would not allow mans own experiences and senses to be misleading. In the case of King, he believed that organized religion was the "opiate of the masses".
He didnt believe that going to church necessarily related to a relationship with God. He felt that church almost got in the way of the progress such as
human and civil rights, for which he was a strong proponent. Furthermore, it is interesting to note the views of Kierkegard in terms of his ideas on religion
and faith. Kierkegard was also skeptical of certain fundamental ideas but is yet another example of a man who, despite those skepticisms, was a deeply religious and believing man.
