The Sisseton Wahpeton Dakota are part of the Sioux Nation, a nation that was radically divided and displaced in the mid 1800s. These people
were driven from their homelands in Minnosota and onto the plains by the encroaching white world that characterized this earlier time in history. Today, the Sisseton Wahpeton Dakota are
struggling to survive in a world that is radically different from that from which their nation sprang. The Sioux were officially divided
by the US government in 1889. The Sisseton Dakota were allocated one of the several reservations which resulted from this division. The Sisseton Dakota, along with the other
Sioux people, were placed on their respective reservations. Although in theory they became wards of the state, in reality they were deprived many vital components of their culture (Anderson,
2006). As a people, the Sisseton Dakota and Native America in general suffered greatly. As Brady (2000) observes "it is absolutely critical that one honor and respect the
dignity and vitality of the Native American faith and heritage". This, however, was not the case in this earlier time. These people were forced to abandon their healing
