"October Sky" which was adapted by his autobiographical novel "The Rocket Boys" exaggerated certain events in the story but the main components of the movie and the book remained the same: inspiration, motivation and living your dream. The name for the movie "October Sky" is actually an anagram of "Rocket Boys" discovered by one of the movies producers when deciding upon the title of the film. In a sense, it provides a good parallel to events and storylines which were changed for the movie. Although some things were changed in the movie, the basic elements remain the same (Fenster 1999). The movie does take some liberties with the novel as it attempts to combine three years worth of rocket building into one school year. There are several areas in which to compare differences and similarities through the characters portrayed and the events which happened. The movie begins by cutting the number of rocket boys involved n the project from the book from the band of six into the four who were portrayed in the movie. This is an attempt at another way to condense material into a two hour movie but still shows that Hickam did not act alone in his quest but that it was shared by his friends. For clarity and to avoid further explanation of detail, the rocket academy they formed in the book was called "The Big Creek Missile Agency" after a combination of the name of their high school and the agency run by their hero Dr. Werner von Braun. In the movie, it was abbreviated to the Coalwood Missile Agency and the name was never elaborated on but only appeared in distant signs.
