"October Sky" which was adapted by his autobiographical novel "The Rocket Boys" exaggerated certain events in the story but the main components of the movie and the book remained the same: inspiration, motivation and living your dream. The name for the movie "October Sky" is actually an anagram of "Rocket Boys" discovered by one of the movies producers when deciding upon the title of the film. In a sense, it provides a good parallel to events and storylines which were changed for the movie. Although some things were changed in the movie, the basic elements remain the same (Fenster 1999). The book, "Rocket Boys" tells the tale of Homer Hickam during his teenage years in the small West Virginia coal mining town of Coalwood. During October of 1957, Hickam and five of his friends watched the first Russian satellite, Sputnik I travel across the night skies. While the adults in this American story were afraid of what a Russian satellite in space might represent, Hickam and his friends were inspired and fascinated. After a fiery speech by the high school principal encouraging the students to prove that they were smarter than the Russians, Hickam and his friends begin to experiment with rockets (Curtis 1999). The boys formed the Big Creek Missile Agency as an homage to their hero Dr. Werner von Braun of the Army Ballistic Agency and built their first missile out of cherry bomb parts and an old flashlight which instantly took down the Hickams garden fence. Throughout the story, Hickams mother provided a great deal of support while her son and his friends continued to slowly work their way through the destruction of her household pots and items.
