With the exception of the name of the country beginning with the same letter, what do these two nations have in common? Stark dissimilarities are the fact that the nations are in different parts of the world. Singapore is in Southeast Asia and boasts a tropical climate, where Switzerland is subject to a great deal of rain and snow ("Singapore," 2003; "Switzerland," 2003). While that is a point that is hard to dispute, the truth is that the two nations do have a lot in common. As entities in their own right, they serve as a sort of neutral and economically viable hubs in their respective regions of the world. In reference to political, social and economic factors, it is true that Singapore and Switzerland do have a lot in common. Each of the nations has an official language, of Chinese and German respectively for Singapore and Switzerland ("Singapore," 2003; "Switzerland," 2003). It should however be noted that for Singapore, there is actually more than one official language ("Singapore," 2003). Still, the idea of having "official" languages is somewhat important. The stance of an official language is a rather controversial topic. In the United States for example, talk of having an official language is frowned upon and so one has to note that this is something that fuses the nations in an odd sort of way. It demonstrates that both Switzerland and Singapore have no-nonsense governments. These are governments that takes a stance. Both of the governments are republics. This is an important observation as of course government type can be rather significant in comparing and contrasting nations.
