I. Introduction The Sikh tradition in Canada has a long history that goes back to just before the turn of the twentieth century.
While in other parts of the world, the Sikh culture thrives, it is only towards the latter part of the twentieth century that Sikhs were once again welcomed into the
nation of Canada. There has been a great deal of prejudice and difficulty assimilating. A hard working lot, the Sikh community generally kept to themselves. With religious life, and
traditional values at the forefront, the people had created communities for themselves, but not without strife. There were hardships, disappointments and difficulties living within the larger society. The group
is a minority in Canada. In 1991, there were 147,440 Sikhs ("Sikh Students," 2001, p.PG) in Canada which accounts for just 0.5% (2001,p.PG) of the population. That certainly constitutes a
minority. Over time, life for the Sikhs in Canada and elsewhere changed. To some extent things improved, but current events say
otherwise as there have been conflicts within the group itself. While just a small minority, the Sikh people have made a positive donation to Canadas cultural mosaic. A very different
culture, Sikhs have their own mode of dress and are known for wearing turbans. It is an essentially religious item, but has many assets ("The Sikh Turban," 2001). The turban
