funny and sad, all at the same time. This paper explains the significance of the title by examining it using the differences between Dee and her family, and the terms
"use-value" and "sign-value" to find the meaning of the words. Discussion The story is set in the deep South, probably some time in the 1980s, though the year is not
specified. Mama and Maggie are waiting for a visit from Dee, Maggies sister, and they are nervous about it because Dee is not like them; she has turned her back
on her "roots" and made her own way in the world. To her, it seems that she is taking advantage of the gains made by African-Americans to carve out a
career for herself; to her family, it seems that she has no respect or understanding of the struggles of the people who came before her. When Dee arrives she not
only gets out of a flashy car, she is dressed in a dress "so loud it hurts my eyes. There are yellows and oranges enough to throw back the light
of the sun" (Walker). Compared to Maggie, who tries to hide from everyone-Mama grabs her arm before she can run back into the house-Dee is outgoing and loves to be
