will continue. There are two primary positions on further exploration. One perspective suggests that money is being wasted on space and that the focus should be on the problems on Earth. The other more adventurous position is that no one knows what exploration will bring, so it is important to forge ahead. Many scientists take the latter position. That is, research should not necessarily be tied to goals because scientific inquiry often yields unknown finds. For example, when Christopher Columbus went looking for a trade route, he would make a phenomenal discovery. When medical researchers attempt to find a cure for a specific disease they sometimes stumble on a cure for another. Space exploration, in all of its glory, is something that is perhaps tied to an unknown outcome, but it also is symbolic of American exceptionalism. Indeed, the excitement was not just attached to advancement in science. It was an advancement for all Americans. As a result of space exploration, many new inventions have come to fruition. The resultant technology has prompted the creation of microwave ovens and communication satellites. While the benefits of space exploration are obvious, the space race that took effect during the 1960s is astounding. It is an important part of scientific and political history and has a great deal of significance. Yet, in delving into the history of space exploration, Russia has been a fierce competitor. Yet, when all is said and done, the American triumph in space technology has a political meaning. The competition would more broadly paint a picture of a strong nation that can use the skies for many purposes.
