The pilgrim, who is Christian, obviously is carrying a load in this particular stage. And, at the beginning of this stage it is evident that the place he is in
is perhaps symbolic of the path Jesus took, walked, as he carried the cross up the hill to his crucifixion. "Now I saw in my dream, that the highway up
which Christian was to go, was fenced on either side with a wall, and that wall was called Salvation. Isaiah 26:1. Up this way, therefore, did burdened Christian run, but
not without great difficulty, because of the load on his back" (Bunyan Third Stage). As Christian arrived at the top of this hill, where stood what one assumes is
the cross of Jesus, his burden fell off of his back and he rejoiced. "Then he stood still a while, to look and wonder; for it was very surprising to
him that the sight of the cross should thus ease him of his burden" (Bunyan Third Stage). He learned, however, that his own burden, the cross he had been carrying,
were symbolic of his own sins. He had to make this journey up the hill, as did Jesus, burdened only by his own sins, in order to be able to
move on to the next stage. He had to feel the weight, at least in part, of what Jesus had carried in order to really see the beauty and freedom
