In March of 1862, the U.S. Civil War was nearly one year old, and at this point it was impossible to determine whether the Union of the North or the Confederates of the South would emerge victorious. At this time, most of the intense fighting was concentrated in and around Virginia, with wins and losses being racked up on both sides. For the three hundred years prior to 1862, warships had been clumsy, massive vessels that often carried more than 100 guns and usually sported crews of between five hundred and twelve hundred men.i The number of guns a ship was equipped with was always of particular importance, which is why the Dahlgren guns that were introduced during the Civil War were not enthusiastically received because they were fewer in number and slower to fire.ii Obviously, "The effect of a powerful gun versus numerous guns was not fully recognized yet," but this was about to change.iii Today, the USS Monitor is heralded as "the most famous of all American warships" largely because of its rotating turret, but in early March of 1862, it was considered to be little more than a little tin can monstrosity.iv The Monitor and its crew had seen a lot of war, and yet the scrappy little ship continued to sail off to wherever it was needed.
