It is decided that because all four of one womans sons had been sent to war, and only one is still alive, the soldiers should bring him home to her.
The film then depicts the group that finds him. Yet, it is Private Ryans unexpected reaction to his free pass to get out of the war, that both stuns and
inspires the characters as well as the audience. The film focuses on D-day, or the June 6, 1944 battle which was fought on Omaha Beach. The
first portion of the movie shows relentless violence. In fact, the violence in this film is so graphic that many movie theaters had posted signs stating that they would strictly
honor the R rating and not allow anyone under the age of 17 in without a parent at their side. For other films they might be lax. They might allow
younger people in to see something such as Half Baked or some other sophomoric tale. But Saving Private Ryan was different. It was realistic. On the other hand, Spielberg is
quick to point out that some of the men who died during the actual war were only 17 years old; still, he did not think the film appropriate for anyone
under the age of 14 (Gordinier, 1998). Grown men would weep after being through it. It was more than just a movie. It allowed people who had been involved in
war to relive it, something that many did not want to do. Yet, it exposed those who have little knowledge of war, to what war is really like. One thing
that certainly can be learned from watching World War II as depicted by Stephen Spielberg, is the humanness of the soldier. In life, soldiers are trained to be somewhat inhuman.
