public and historical attention, but it is well within the capabilities of everyone to make a difference in life simply by aiding another person, by being a voice for constructive
action, in short through community service. My personal philosophy--and any legacy that I leave behind in my college career--is founded on this philosophy, which is founded on the idea
that it is important to make a difference. This opinion has also been voiced by American leaders. In 2002, President George W. Bush called for every American to donate their
time and energy in 4000 hours of community service (Armies of compassion, 2002). This proposal indicates how the government values community service and sees it as beneficial to society.
Community service and involvement can take many forms. There are numerous community projects and also working with others on a personal basis. I have personally been the president, as well
as the treasurer, of a community service organization. The student could discuss some beneficial project or aspect of these positions that he learned from or that benefited the community.
As a residence life staff member for three years, I have had the opportunity to deal with a variety of students. In this position, I have aided depressed students. How
did this come about? In what ways did you help them? How did this make you feel personally? Did you find it to be a rewarding experience? Perhaps one
of your interactions could be described in these terms. "Joe" was one of these students. He was seriously depressed over breaking up with his girlfriend and this caused his
performance to decline in several of his classes. In aiding Joe, I, first of all, listened to him as he expressed his anger, frustration and grief over the breakup.
