A Farewell to Arms is perhaps one of the best books depicting war and, once the reader has completed this novel, they truly feel the hardship and strife and despair of the soldiers and begin to comprehend the magnitude of war and its realities. This novel uses natural imagery in many ways (A Farewell to Arms Symbolism, 2002). It is interesting to note that Hemingway "juxtaposes images of fertility and life against those of death" (A Farewell to Arms Symbolism, 2002). One of the most noticeable symbols in this novel is that of rain (A Farewell to Arms Symbolism, 2002). "It is raining outside almost every time something bad occurs, such as the armys retreat or Catherines death, and serves to mark these events as random occurrences (just like rain itself)" (A Farewell to Arms Symbolism, 2002). There is also a lot of reference to mud in this novel which, of course, is a by-product of rain (A Farewell to Arms Symbolism, 2002). The mud is an obstacle for the army since it makes walking very difficult and messy and cold (A Farewell to Arms Symbolism, 2002). The purpose then of the mud imagery is to reflect the hostility of nature toward man (A Farewell to Arms Symbolism, 2002). There are also positive associations with rain in this novel (A Farewell to Arms Symbolism, 2002). Rain is a symbol of life, and this is evidenced when Henry decides to leave the Italian army and is "baptized" by the rain (A Farewell to Arms Symbolism, 2002). "In this dual purpose, Hemingway places all control, both curse and blessing, into the hands of the world and not of man" (A Farewell to Arms Symbolism, 2002). ...
