third world nations sets up a situation where workers are exploited. On one hand, the cheap labor in underdeveloped countries takes jobs from Americans, but on the other, people who
will work for a pittance are not adequately compensated. With a model where laborers are exploited, everyone loses. Of course, not all international workers are exploited. Some are union members
and have lucrative jobs. Yet, an intern wanting to learn about labor and how it exists internationally will want to examine the status quo in a variety of ways. In
focusing on international business, labor practices are important to fully comprehend. How do labor forces influence international business? Obviously, with lower labor costs, businesses can operate much more cheaply.
This is particularly true in manufacturing where low level skills are required. It also opens the door for the very controversial child labor practices that many contend are unconscionable. In
other nations, the laws are much more relaxed than in the U.S. where labor for teenagers involves extreme regulatory practices and child labor is not allowed. Yet, in other countries,
this is a problem and something that anyone entering the international market must understand. Also, it is important to understand the political factors which loom large and affect doing business
abroad. Each nation around the world possesses a government type and while many are democratic or undergoing democratization, other nations like China, are communist or socialist. These government types
do affect labor and the type of labor employed. Theoretically, competitive nations are more likely to have a quality workforce. Yet, certain types of things may be produced with little
education and quality may be found in the most horrible conditions. Unionism is another chance for workers to do well. Often, union workers will command higher pay and more benefits
