senseless war. It gave them hope in the midst of hopelessness as well as a tangible connection to the sensible world they left behind. Good luck charms may be seen
in simple things from a pebble to a picture. People carry good luck charms in ordinary life and during Vietnam, people at home wore MIA bracelets as if doing so
might bring the boy whose name was inscribed back alive. OBrien writes about the subject of Vietnam and of good luck charms. In
a book appropriately titled The Things They Carried, he writes about what the soldiers carried. The book begins by explaining how Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carried letters from a girl in
New Jersey (OBrien 1). He carried them in his knapsack at the bottom in a plastic bag (1). The letters weighed just 10 ounces (2). One can imagine that carrying
letters around are testaments to the fact that he has a life at home. Vietnam provides a backdrop of chaos. The soldiers were faced with a war that most did
not believe in and they were not cheered when they returned. Many returned in body bags anyway. But carrying around trinkets and letters did help.
The soldiers in Vietnam, at least in the book, carried around a variety of things. Like boy scouts on a camping trip they needed items to survived.
They carried can openers, pocket knives, watches, matches and sewing kits, amongst other things (OBrien 2). These are mundane items but they represent the life and death paradigm. They carried
items that would aid their survival. This is something significant. People in general go about their ordinary lives and carry their necessities. It might be a cell phone or a
