is the most important one in the work. Hester is an example and she sets the stage for what it was like for a woman at the time. In order
to examine the character of Hester, and demonstrate that adultery as a thematic element is most important, it is helpful to view the work and the character through different points
of view. It is only then that the reader will have a greater understanding of Hester and how the charge of adultery has affected her life. Through a feminist
perspective, one sees a very different than average Hester who is in some way tortured in a patriarchal society. A psychological perspective sheds light on the protagonists personality as well
a possible reasons for her tattered relationships. Finally, a historical view of the work is significant in understanding the significance of adultery at the time. Indeed, the character is entrenched
