death and destruction caused by the natural disaster. They were of course able to do this as they watched news broadcasts. People were horrified when it was announced that thousands
were dead. Each day, the death toll would climb. Yet, while there was devastation, the nation and the world was spared a significant economic dilemma. The insurance companies in China
are strong and have not complained much. The region was for the most part rural. Some businesses were hit, such as Toyota, but by and large, the industries were spared.
Transportation was halted to an extent, but that was confined to one region. In examining the financial impact of the earthquake, it seems as if it is more localized in
its effects, but even there, problems are minimal. The Sichuan region will be spared a significant economic downturn. That said, China feels the general effects of the world markets, but
of course, the earthquake only has had a minimal effect on the Chinese economy. First, a look at the tragic event will help in an economic analysis of the region.
II. The Sichuan Earthquake On May 12, 2008, a devastating earthquake hit the Sichauan province. One week after the massive quake, more than 34,000 were
declared dead and some of those were rescue workers (Ho, 2008). That was an early count. Later, it would be announced that the body count was as high as 69,
136 ("Quake death toll rises by 2 to 69,136," 2008). One week later in the region, flags were flown at half-staff and a moment of silence was observed as
