story of an experience in a concentration camp and the story of a mother, an infant, and a young girl. It is also, perhaps like many stories, one that can
be read in relationship to the theories of nature vs. nurture. The following paper examines elements of these two theories in the story. The Shawl: Nature and Nuture
In looking at the story it is important to first illustrate aspects of the theories. While many argue that one or the other primarily makes up who we are, the
focus will be on the two different sides as they relate to the story. In the case of nature it can be said that, "From an evolutionary point of view,
certain things we know about the world are innate, although modifiable by interactions with family, education, religion and society" (Csongradi). In essence some things people know, regardless of what they
are taught. From another perspective involving this theory one author notes, "Individuals most basic drive involves insuring that their genetic codes survive death" (Nature vs. Nature). And in the realm
of physiology, it is clear that nature plays a very big role (PBS). In relationship to nurture, "But even the most diehard geneticists acknowledge that the environment plays a
major role in shaping our behavior, temperament, and intelligence" (PBS). While nature plays important roles in ones life, the environment also plays a very important role in developing who someone
is and becomes. In the story The Shawl one can see many different elements that speak of nature and nurture. For example, there is the infant Magda. She is
