the invariance principle (where choice is not based on presentation or structure but, rather, on the basis of consistency in outcome) is applicable to social interactions and that anything outside
of the norm is strictly deviant. This is especially true in the case of transgendering (formerly transsexuality), where the biological definition of gender at birth is invariariable. However,
given the medical technology and knowledge of the modern world and the evolution of social acceptance, this can no longer be considered as justifiably true. Deviance is in
the eye of the beholder, as well as the social acceptability of individual behavior. The fact that deviance is defined as being outside the cultural norms means that there
is already a shared understanding of what constitutes deviance. The ideas surrounding what constitutes deviancy and how it should be approached have changed dramatically in the past fifty years.
A new perspective that assesses the primary variables of the system in which an individual functions and then eliminates the problem of the dichotomy of us and them
and places the individual within the process of decision making rather than as an either/or to conformity is needed in a world where society is becoming synonymous to diversity.
The question of how deviant behavior originates, whether it naturally occurs according to a persons characteristics or whether it is a matter of environmental influences has never been completely
answered. However, people change, cultures interact and the world becomes more aware of the etiology of certain deviancies, causing the level of tolerance to increase. The emphasis
