At the same time, some unions remain strong and some strikes linger. The 1997 steel workers strike in Pueblo Colorado is one that had gone on for years and a court recently awarded workers what it feels they deserve. In 1997, in Pueblo Colorado, one thousand steel workers would eventually go on strike due to forced overtime that had occurred over a period of many months (Dukakis & Zwerdling, 1997). The workers who went on strike were aligned with a specific plant called Oregon Steel which was once a company called CF&I Steel (1997). CF&I Steel went bankrupt (1997). Yet, the relationship between the company and its workers is somewhat unique. In this town, many of the workers had worked at the plants for generations (1997). Families have become a part of this company that had been taken over during financial stress. In fact, the city was integral in prompting the takeover as it offered special tax incentives (1997). A lot was riding on this company. The people had invested their hearts and livelihoods in this Pueblo mainstay. The problem is that since the takeover, workers were required to work overtime and some had to work as many as sixteen day shifts for six or seven days per week (Dukakis & Zwerdling, 1997). It was on October 3, 1997 that they began their strike and the strike had community support (1997). The strike started out with good intentions.
