to do just that, had begun his memoir writing with This Boys Life. About his own life, he tells a dismal tale about running from his father, as well
as from another man in his mothers life. At times the work is depressing but the author tells his tale as if it were fiction, distancing the reader from the
fact that these things really did happen. Further, the author is upbeat in general. His use of dialog, which clearly had to be fictionalized to an extent, created a readable
and exciting memoir. In reviewing This Boys Life, the setting is rather important. Important in any work, the setting in fiction is carefully chosen by authors. But in writing
non-fiction, the author must use the setting as it existed. Yet, illuminating or exaggerating what was is perhaps part of the charm of This Boys Life. Tobias is a master
of description and one wonders if the settings were truly so extraordinary. Yet, the settings present in This Boys Life were clearly the authors memories. At the same time, one
wonders if the objects present in some of the scenes were accurately portrayed or an exaggeration or false memory of the writer. In any event, the setting certainly adds to
the touching but depressing mood of the work. First, portraying 1950s America in such a dark light may be difficult for modern audiences to accept. Memories prove to weed out
the bad and remember the good and many readers do remember the 1950s as a good time. The show "Happy Days" in fact exemplifies the good times which were had
in that era. But This Boys Life shows the dark side of family life. Fleeing from his father, this boy goes with his mother to various states. The states serve
