This is a 6 page paper discussing the significance of the setting in Edgar Allan Poe’s story “The Cask of Amontillado”. The story takes place in the catacombs underneath a town during carnival. For this story of revenge and death, the dark, damp, and bone-filled catacombs provide a contrast to the life, color, and merriment of carnival and have a great impact on the reader as to the reality of the events which occur during the story.

come from the world of carnival which consisted of life, merriment, color and ventured into the cold, damp, dark world of the catacombs which are used to entomb the dead.
The contrast is stark and while neither of the characters seem disturbed by it, the effect is chilling upon the reader who knows that Mortresor is exacting revenge on his
companion. Fortunato is also dressed as a jester for carnival which makes Mortresor happy in regards to the fact he knows Fortunato will be made a fool but also the
image of a colourful Fortunato is in stark contrast to the dark grave which encloses him. While Mortresor lures his victim further into the catacombs they discuss the family motto
and shield. The shield depicts the very events which are taking place within the tomb. A foot (Montresor) is crushing a serpent (Fortunato) whose fangs are embedded in his heel.
These images within the setting of death provide extra impact for Montresors act of revenge. Fortunatos final entombment also has him depicted in the same position as Christ upon his
death. Although this was no intended by Montresor, the image provides additional contrast to the innocence of Fortunato and the opposite of innocence, Montresor.
The morbid tale of revenge of "The Cask of Amontillado" is carefully depicted with crypt like wine vaults which eventually entomb the unfortunate Fortunato. The theme of revenge
and darkness is emphasized by the damp and deadly vaults. Montresor, the narrator of the tale intends on extracting revenge upon Fortunato who once insulted him. Mortresor intends on seeking
revenge in support of this family motto "Nemo me impune lacessit" ("No one assails me with impunity") (Womack). The coat of arms further bears the image of a human
