in technology. The cell phone and computer industries were moving fast. In fact, the market was driven by these advances as evidenced by the stellar economy through most of the
1980s, and after the recession in the early 1990s. After that, much of the 1990s were strong economically and many attribute this to the computer revolution. There was a great
deal of investment in the dot-com companies until the bubble burst. This was driven by multiple trends. Suddenly, everyone had a computer. They were getting smaller and smaller. Although many
attribute the changes to the presence of Microsoft, other companies like Apple have been key players in the change. Today, firms like Microsoft, IBM and Apple have shifted its orientation
from one that creates and sells products to one that offers services. Other smaller companies have followed suit. This has created a niche for outsourcing. With such a demand for
service today, certain companies are more likely to vie for the outsourcing of their service needs. There are many examples of the
outsourcing trend. In an article written by John Hechlinger (2003) that appears in the Wall Street Journal, it was reported that the International Business Machines Corporation agreed to take over
much of operations associated with the Visteon Corporation. As the article unfolds, it is reported that this was actually an outsourcing deal with a worth of at least $2 billion
over a 10 year period (Hechlinger, 2003). This is considered to be, at least for the time period, one of the larger deals associated with IBM (Hechlinger, 2003). The article
goes on to discuss Visteon, a spin off of Ford that has started to separate itself from Fords mission (Hechlinger, 2003). Visteon, in effect, had come into its own. Visteon
