conditions and stimuli. The general senses are the receptors located throughout the body that are responsible for the sensations of pain, temperature, pressure, light touch, and how the body and
limbs are situated in space (Chiras 213). The special senses monitor external conditions via sight, hearing, taste, smell and balance. The general senses can be categorized as fitting into
two groups, which are encapsulated receptors and nerve endings (Chiras 213). When an individual closes his eyes and considers how he feels that person will probably become aware of the
pressure of a chair pushing against his back. Other sensations might be the heat from a reading lamp; a cat brushing against his leg, or pain originating from gas pressure
in his intestines (Chiras 213). Sensory receptors fall into five functional categories, which are: thermoreceptors; photoreceptors; chemoreceptors; mechanoreceptors; and nocieptors (pain receptors) (Chiras 230). As this indicates, sensory stimuli
can be internal or external. The special senses, taste, smell, vision, hearing and balance provide external sense stimuli (Chiras 230). The special senses aid people, as well as other animals,
obtain food and the other requirements crucial to survival and health (Chiras 229). Both forms of sensory information are extremely significant to homeostasis and trigger reflex action or physiological
changes. However, there are many sensory receptors that cease responding to prolonged exposure to stimuli, which is a reaction known as "sensory adaptation" (Chiras 230). The endocrine system: Human
physiology involves a complex variety of systems, which must operate properly and work in concert in order for health to be maintained. In order to achieve this, the body must
