a New Civilization At the turn of the twentieth century, the New York Times printed the statement that "we step upon the threshold of 1900...facing a brighter dawn of civilization"
(Moore & Simon 76). Both the society and the civilization existing in the year 1900 inherently knew that it stood on the verge of great and massive change as
the century turned. The extent of this change, and the far-reaching and lasting effects it would have on life as it was known during that era, however, was beyond
the imaginations of even the most brilliant of its scientists and the most progressive of its thinkers. The century that followed the dawn of the twentieth century produced discoveries and
inventions holding the potential to both awe and frighten even the bravest of the new eras pioneers, not to mention the masses of average citizens that made up collective society
and civilization. As this society stepped upon the threshold of 1900, it did indeed face a brighter dawn of civilization, but it also faced an era of transition and
modification that would turn tradition inside out and recalculate the boundaries of convention and belief. As the roller coaster that was the twentieth century climbed toward its peak at
