Operation Phantom Fury. It was a cooperative operation between the US Marine Corps and the Iraqi Interim Government. The battle held many military lessons particularly in regard to
urban operations. Fallujah is a large city. At the time of the first battle it was home to approximately 300,000 residents (Kay, 2004). Peace was at least
temporarily restored but by April of 2004 around 1,000 insurgents had reestablished their base in Fallujah and once again turned it into an insurgent stronghold (Kay, 2004). By November
and the outbreak of the battle, the city was littered with strategically placed insurgent booby traps and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Sniper activity was heavy. Coalition forces were
charged with recapturing the city and wiping out the insurgents that had established their base there. Although coalition forces were successful in retaking the city, the outcome was not a
total obliteration of the guerilla forces. An estimated half of the insurgents are believed to have escaped the attack unscathed (Kay, 2004). Never-the-less, as Hollis (2006) observes, Fallujah
is considered "the most fierce urban fighting for the Marines since the Battle of Hue City in Vietnam in 1968". Right alongside, those Marines of course, was the US
Army. The Battle of Fallujah offers many lessons for us all. The efforts at the Battle of Fallujah are attributable to an
estimated 15,000 troops (Hollis, 2006), many of whom were assigned to US Army units. The civilian population of the city had shrunk to between 30,000 and 100,000 (Kay, 2004).
The basic assault on Fallujah was accomplished by four Marine and two Army battalions (Kay, 2004). Additional troops were charged with cordoning off the city and moving supplies,
