The following paper examines and analyzes the use of imagery in Walcotts poem. The Sea Is History by Derek Walcott In understanding the use of imagery in the
poem it is important to first examine what imagery is in the literary world. One author notes that, "We speak of the pictures evoked in a poem as imagery. Imagery
refers to the pictures which we perceive with our minds eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin, and through which we experience the duplicate world created by poetic language" (Abriza). Such imagery
can evoke particular types of emotions, thoughts, even senses such as smell and touch. They are often employed to create such perspectives in an individual so that the reader gains
images or pictures which help get the poets intentions across. As a simple example, a poet could present an image of a puppy, mentioning an adoring puppy, to help describe
how they felt about a lover. Such an image would conjure up certain perspectives of the narrator and his love of someone. In Walcotts poem, in relationship to the
title, the fact that he notes how the sea is history immediately makes the reader wonder. They may wonder about how the ocean is related to history, what the poet
will infer in relationship to mans history and the sea, if he is employing metaphors, or if the poem is about the sea and history at all. So, with the
