"The Scurlock Studio and Black Washington: Picturing the Promise" was published in 2009 by Smithsonian Books.
The book is a collection of photographs made by Addison Scurlock and his sons Robert and George Scurlock between 1911 when Addison opened Schurlock Studios in Washington DC and the
1990s. The photographs are invaluable in that they depict the transition of middle class African American culture as it occurred over the twentieth century. Unlike many other collections
of African American history, these photographs depict primarily the comforts and joys middle class blacks had during this time. Unfortunately, the stories of the less fortunate African Americans in
DC remain untold. They couldnt afford the luxury of having a professional photographer document their life accomplishments or certainly not their disappointments.
Although the fact shouldnt distract from the value of "The Scurlock Studio and Black Washington: Picturing the Promise", it was definitely the more privileged blacks that made their
way to Scurlock Studios. The one-hundred photos in the book include the movers and shakers of the black community, the business owners, the politicians, and the preachers. These
