can be tempted, pulled down into more selfish and less noble actions. The following paper presents a report on this work. The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis
The setting of the novel is really within the writers mind. While it may be someplace in Europe, due to the fact that C.S.
Lewis was from Europe, and it may take place during the first half of the 20th century, because again this was Lewis time period, the setting and time period could
be anywhere at any time. The vague condition of the time and setting is due to the fact that the story only involves letters from Screwtape, no other individual. And,
although the reader knows that he is writing to his nephew Wormwood, the letters are from Screwtape and so the only information one gets about Wormword are from his uncle
Screwtape. Screwtape is a master, a demon, and Wormwood is something of his apprentice, learning the ropes concerning tempting his patients and
getting them to turn from God. Each letter essentially presents steps and information for Wormwood to use in tempting this young man away from good. In his first letter Screwtape
tells Wromwood, "Remember, he is not, like you, a pure spirit. Never having been a human (Oh that abominable advantage of the Enemys!) you dont realize how enslaved they are
