significant turning point in the history of western civilization. With it came the idea of progress, an idea that influenced not just science and technology but religion and even
politics. Indeed, the scientific revolution, the Enlightenment, and the idea of progress that came with them were even influential factors in the American and French revolutions. People were
affected as they had never been before. From Copernicus to Voltaire, the greatest minds of all time became occupied with the refinement of scientific knowledge and even the scientific
method itself. Many aspects of their lives were influenced by this new obsession and the worlds reaction to it. While there is
no real consensus among historians as to exactly when the Scientific Revolution started, it is generally agreed on that it was in the seventeenth century (Henry, 2008). Copernicus, of
course, was the first to discover truly radical information that, when finally released, ushered in the scientific revolution and the age of Enlightenment. Copernicus, to the consternation of the
Church in particular, asserted that it was the sun around which our planet revolved, not the sun around the earth as was held by the Church. This refutation of
long held religious beliefs was something that turned on end the way people thought. It challenged everything that they had ever believed.
Galileos support of Copernicus theory brought the anger of the Church down on his head. He was labeled a heretic, in fact. Regardless of the scientific
