Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This 5 page paper responds to the following scenario: You arrive home late at night. You walk up to the front door, unlock it, and reach in to turn on the light switch located just inside the front door. The light does not come on! Now what? The application of the scientific method and assessments of the importance of science are components of this paper. Bibliography lists 4 sources

in determining what happened and what to do next (Steps of the Scientific Method, 2009). The first thing that occurs is that one asks the question: Why is
the light out? There are a variety of possible reasons that the light is out and assessing different factors (doing research) can help to determine what occurred in an
effort to answer the question. Providing some background research into the issue is valuable in moving forward and answering the questions. The
use of observation can be helpful in providing additional information in answering the question and in forming a hypothesis. Observing whether any unusual conditions exist, whether the light switch
appears feels or looks different, or whether there is glass below the light which would suggest damage to the bulb are all things that might be observed as a part
of background research. In addition, I might check to see if the other lights in the house will go on or not. If the other lights in the
house go on, the hypothesis that might be formed is: the light does not turn on because the light bulb burned out. Observation of the light bulb might
also support this hypothesis. In order to test the hypothesis, I would change the light bulb and then try again to turn on the light. If the light
goes on after changing the light bulb, the hypothesis is successfully proven (Trefil and Hazen, 2010). The results of the scientific method would successfully address the problem.
Conclusions drawn in this situation are based on the application of the experiment and the assessment of the outcomes. In the scenario provided, it is likely that the burned
