to some extent took creative license, he based the film quite intensely on the Mary Shelley book, at least for the first film he made. Shelley herself addressed issues
of science and technology, and perhaps the most obvious idea that the work brings forth are concepts of cloning and things of that nature. The use of lightning of course
is integral to the discussion, but while Shelley touched on such things, the science incorporated in the works is simply not accurate, and is actually misleading. In Picarts "The Cinematic
Rebirths of Frankenstein," the author critiques traditional interpretations of the Frankenstein story in respect to its representations of technology and power as well as in terms of monstrosity and
gender ("Its Alive" PG). She explains that the theme of monstrosity for example, or the masking and unveiling of ones deepest anxieties is what is quite appealing (PG).
People are both afraid and drawn to tales about monsters because the protagonists are both superhuman and subhuman, and people see themselves in something they regard as alien (PG). That
is a powerful commentary. Yet, aside from issues of monstrosity, the concepts of science technology certain enter the realm. What is feared about cloning, for example, is that one will
create a monster like what appears in the Frankenstein films. And while the monster is pure fantasy, people let their imaginations go, and believe that it is possible. Still, science
is integral to the film because if the audience does not believe that the events are possible scientifically, they will not enjoy the film. Like the Shelley tale, Whale is
