the story of a young girl coming of age in Singapore during the 1960s. It is a novel that speaks of family structures, which involve power, and a novel that
speaks of social and political structures as well, both of which possess examples of violence and power. The following paper analyzes the novel in relationship to examples of power and
violence in relationship to both global and intimate perspectives. The Scent of the Gods by Fiona Cheong This particular novel is told from the perspective of the main
character, Su Yen. She is a girl of eleven years of age and girl who is orphaned and yet able to live under the domain of Grandmother, a woman who
is also raising other children who have been orphaned. In this respect one clearly sees the intimate reality of global power and violence for one sees how the parents of
these children are dead. These children are also living in a home along with aunts and uncles which offers, or creates, something of a social environment that is far more
complex or larger than many families. In this basic setting one can see how the family is affected by the power of the nation and the world around them.
They have found an intriguing refuge, but also a very powerful social and political existence, within this family in light of the fact that Grandmother can be seen as a
