love, lust, ignorance and hope. The following paper briefly summarize the novel in relationship to what Hawthorne was writing about and then examines two characteristics found in two of the
characters in the novel. The characteristics are the search for ones identity and the need to belong. The Scarlet Letter "The Scarlet Letter" is the story of a
young woman, socially widowed, who engages in a relationship with the minister of the town. She becomes pregnant and is imprisoned, never telling anyone whose child it is. The town,
a Puritan town, is vehemently opposed to this woman and she is made to wear a scarlet letter that tells everyone who sees her that she is an adultress. Even
when the town says she can remove it, she wears it as a badge of her own identity. The minister never comes forward to claim his child because he is
too afraid of what may happen, too afraid of not belonging and not being true to his religious calling. It is a novel that clearly speaks of Hawthornes writing style
as one who "frequently focused more on a characters inner struggle" (Hawthorne Writing Style). Characteristics Identity. Hester is most obviously the one person in the novel trying to
find her own identity. In this we can see her as sad, lonely, loving, determined, or ignorant. All of these minute characteristics go into the character of Hester as she
tries to find her own identity. As one critic notes, Hester is really given freedom to do as she pleases to some extent, but chooses her own path, not societys:
