is often the case with very powerful and intriguing novels, this one was made into a film. And, like many films, the story becomes somewhat different when taken from novel
format to the screen. With that in mind the following paper briefly summarizes Hawthornes novel and then contrasts the book and the film. The Novel As mentioned, this
story is one about a woman during Puritan times. She is a strong woman and also a very honorable woman. But, she was not considered to be an honorable woman
by her societys standards. In the beginning we see a married woman whose husband is away. It seems that he is always away, and perhaps even chooses to live elsewhere.
As such we assume that Hester is essentially a free woman by our modern standards. But, in her time and place she was expected to remain pure and true to
her husband. Hesters heart and soul and emotional desires led her to have a passionate affair with the preacher, who was equally as taken with her. As a result of
their union Hester became pregnant. Because her husband did not live with her she was known to have had an affair and was shunned and ridiculed by her community. She
was put into prison and made to wear a scarlet leader to indicate that she was an adulteress. However, she never revealed who the father of the child was and
remained a very noble and courageous woman. Interestingly enough, even though she was shunned and ridiculed, she was not completely kicked out of the community. Nor was she eternally
hated. She found a place for herself and while it was not within the circle of the society, it was a place that suited her just fine for she had
