We might say where the Church and State were tied together, early alphabets and language forms also existed. I would say that the Puritans tied the Church and State tightly together, and felt mandated to do so, such actions are certainly shown in Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter.

Introduction Nathaniel Hawthornes novel The Scarlet Letter (1850) is so well known, that the title as well as the symbol has enmeshed itself in American speech. The context in current vocabulary, will usually occur when someone feels they have made a major error, not always something harmful, but more in the area of miscalculation. Then they might turn to a friend and say, just paint the letter "A" on my chest. Or another variation may be one, which is more alliterative. The person has confessed to doing something particularly "stupid." They may then say, "well, just paint a big red "S" on my chest. Both of these examples are current and conversational references to The Scarlet Letter. Yet what we often miss in the progression of the story is that the symbol of the letter A, changes in both relationship to Hester and also in relationship to how others perceive her. Impact of the letter "A" We are using the word "symbol" to indicate one thing that stands for another. Xs and Os for example at the end of a letter or on a friendly card mean "I love you." Watch as the letter A progresses through our story, and almost begins to loose its color, or does it? Dream: When Hester leaves the prison, with her infant daughter in her arms, the scarlet letter on her chest is almost a dream symbol, one that can hardly be real, like awakening ...
