40-hour weeks, and you dont think you can endure much longer, remember why you are in that classroom. You are in that classroom because you love your subject and
you love kids. You are a cultivator of minds, a shaper of nations. You are not just a teacher" (Inspiring Words for Educators, 2000, p. 1). There is
no profession that is quite like being a teacher. It is one of the most frustrating, demanding, and ultimately rewarding careers an individual can hope for. When asked
why they became teachers, most will respond because they like children and want to help them become successful adults. But this is often easier said than done because a
teacher is in essence not a single vocation but many. Like physicians, teachers must constantly be learning new techniques and relate to students as individuals, getting to know personally
each and every one of them (Wolk, 1996). This is a way for a teacher to connect students life experiences to the subjects they are learning about, which allows
them to grow in amazing and unexpected ways. As first-year teacher Sylvia Y. Williams (2001) quickly realized that, "Not all children are the same" (p. 28). She discovered
that being a teacher was more than simply teaching students how to think; it also involved a bit of parenting and psychoanalysis as well (Williams, 2001). While teaching in
an urban school, Ms. Williams observed, "Many of my students live in the worst of circumstances, and many are exposed to adult problems and live adult-like lives although they are
children" (Williams, 2001, p. 28). She must establish a rapport with these children so they know they have a compassionate person to turn to should they need to.
