17th century in the United States. It has long been the subject of a great deal of research, speculation, and dissertation as scholars and historians have attempted to understand what
happened and why. It was a time when the entire region of the area of Salem, Massachusetts seemed filled with fear and anxiety, looking at everyone to see if they
could be a witch. The most pious of women in the Puritan church were accused and by the time it was over perhaps 200 had been accused or imprisoned for
being a witch and 19 supposed witches had been executed. There are many theories involving these infamous trials, including a more modern
theory that the individuals suffered from ergot poisoning, a theory that will be briefly discussed but seems to hold no true answer to the witch trials. There are theories about
jealousy, land lust, power struggles, and many more. However, the truth may be that a simple fear and misunderstanding got completely out of control and simply fed on the fears
of the people, leaving many to further think it was all the work of the devil. The following paper examines some of the history of the Salem witch trials.
