reveal other types of irrational behavior, but serious concerns about witchcraft isnt one of them. These trials expose the hysteria and paranoia of the time, and how people desperate
to find a "reason" for their disappointments pointed the finger at two young girls in order to appease their own realities. Wading through the "evidence" of the cases merely
supports this position. The Salem Witch Trials were merely a cover for the paranoia of the people, and a means of allowing
the people of Salem to bypass their own personal responsibility in certain matters. By pinning the label of "witch" on two young women, the people were able to identify
them as evil and other-worldly, and therefore had the perfect scapegoats for which to pin a host of wrongdoing upon. But the evidence does not reveal anything solid in
terms of their guilt, but merely reveals two young girls whose actions were misinterpreted, misunderstood, and too readily analyzed by shallow assumptions which served the immediate needs of the town.
This paper then will analyze the hysteria which enveloped Salem, and will show how unfounded the claims of witchcraft were against the
accused. This paper will identify the struggles and issues which typically faced the residents of Salem at the time which will reveal how such a mass hysteria could originate
in the first place. The people of Salem were desperate souls, and in choosing to prosecute in the form of the Salem Witch Trials, revealed just how hysteria can
