was a powerful chieftain" (Norse saga, 2006). The characters reveal themselves through action, and through their relationship with others (Norse saga, 2006). Honor is important, and so is the supernatural,
as well as luck, and behavior is rarely explained (Norse saga, 2006). The early sagas were oral, not written, and so would have been kept simple, full of action and
easily understood concepts such as friendship and loyalty, with little of the deep psychological exposition that marks written works. With all that in mind, lets invent a saga about a
warrior named Olaf, his friend Sven the blacksmith, and a dragon named Bob. (This saga is much more light-hearted than the traditional ones like "Beowulf," for instance.) The Saga Olaf,
his friend Sven, and a small number of families lived in a beautiful valley. Olaf was a great warrior, one of the Kings men, and Sven was a skilled blacksmith.
Olaf guarded the village and was happy in his work; Sven worked hard too but he was unhappy; he really wanted to lie in the sunshine and read, not be
forever working in the smithy, making horseshoes and farm implements. They had been friends since they were boys, and it seemed that nothing could ever break their friendship. That is,
until a new family moved to the valley, comprised of Jan and his wife Helga, their sons Siegfried and Albert, and their daughter Kristin. Kristin was tall, slim, flaxen-haired and
