are now an integrated part of civic infrastructure in many communities, and it can be difficult to imagine life without them. That said, no two social workers do exactly the
same kind of work. This is because the "society" each worker works in can be dramatically different. Certainly, a social worker working in an urban inner city is facing a
different set of challenges than a social worker working in a rural community. Moving into the 21st century, it may well be the rural sphere of social work that gets
the most attention. This is because, as shall be covered in this paper, rural areas present a totally unique set of challenges to the social worker, as well as a
unique set of material conditions that make effective social work in the area more necessary than ever before. After establishing clear operating parameters for both social work and what it
means to be "rural", this paper will address the special challenges faced by social workers in rural areas, as well as shed light on the various roles that a rural
social worker might well adopt in his or her line of work. In this paragraph, the student is assisted in providing a straightforward definition of social work. Because
