the most universal type of books currently sold. Discussion The word "genre" means "type" or "classification." When we talk about books and mention the science fiction genre, or the mystery
genre, or the romance genre, we are talking about all the books that have certain characteristics in common that place them with other books of the same nature. A book
in the mystery genre, for instance, has a puzzle (usually a murder) that has to be solved, while a book in the slave narrative genre is a work written by
a former slave. At times books can be classified as being in more than one genre, such as fantasy/science fiction. But of all the genres being published, romance is far
and away the most popular. While the label "romance" can be given to works that go back as far as the Middle Ages or even earlier, this paper is concerned
with the modern form that were all familiar with: the romance novel. These books are wildly successful, accounting for "about one half of all paperback book sales," a market worth
over a billion dollars a year (Romance genre study). Romance novels tend to be ridiculed by a great many people, but even more people buy them and enjoy them.
Part of the trouble with this genre is that the novels are very formulaic and the plot points never vary. While this is off-putting for many people, apparently readers like
the familiarity of the structure because they keep this genre at the top of the list. The formula is simple: "A man and woman meet, fall in love, fall
